Tour the Molengracht Plaza

Join us on a virtual tour as we explore the history, attractions, and the unique charm of the Molengracht Plaza in Pella, Iowa.

Nestled in the heart of Iowa, our charming town of Pella welcomes visitors with a delightful blend of Dutch heritage and Midwestern hospitality. Among the many gems that make Pella special, the Molengracht Plaza stands out as a vibrant hub that encapsulates the town's rich cultural tapestry. Located in the Pella downtown business area, the Molengracht Plaza was built to replicate an authentic Dutch canal and is over 100,000 square feet. The better of two worlds, the Molengracht complex combines a 21st century entrepreneurial spirit with Old World charm. Enjoy Pella’s charming boutiques, stores, bakeries and meat markets…all within a couple of blocks. The Molengracht’s Grand Opening took place in January of 2001 and has grown to include a movie theater, casual & fine dining, business offices, residential condominiums, retail/office space for lease and an authentic canal and working drawbridge. **

A Glimpse into the History:

Pella, founded in 1847 by a group of Dutch immigrants led by Dominie (Reverend) H.P. Scholte, is known for preserving its strong Dutch roots. The name "Pella" itself is derived from the city in Macedonia where, according to historical accounts, the early Christians found refuge. Molengracht Plaza pays homage to this rich history, with "Molengracht" translating to "mill canal" in Dutch.

The Design:

Molengracht Plaza's design reflects the traditional architecture and aesthetic sensibilities of the Netherlands. Cobblestone streets wind through the plaza, flanked by buildings adorned with charming Dutch facades. The careful attention to detail creates an atmosphere that transports visitors to a quaint European village while maintaining the warmth of a Midwestern community.

Events and Festivals:

The Molengracht Plaza comes alive throughout the year with a calendar of events and festivals that celebrate Pella's cultural diversity. From the annual Tulip Time Festival to the Christmas Tour of Homes, the plaza becomes a focal point for community gatherings, showcasing the town's vibrant spirit.
